Finding the Right Vacuum Pouch for Your Product

Finding the right packaging solution is crucial in the success of your product. When it comes to vacuum pouches, there are a variety of different types, sizes and brands to choose from, it can be difficult to find the right fit for your needs. See below for more information on the different types of film and pouch features to help guide you on your path to finding the pouch that meets your needs.

Types of Film Construction
There are two primary methods of vacuum pouch co-extruded film construction: blown and cast. The blown method produces a stiffer, flatter structure with its multiple PA layers that has a high resistance to punctures and abrasions. Cast co-extrusion pouches have a slight wave to their flatness, with the multiple PA layers creating strength through a slight stretch that flows around the contours of the product, allowing whole muscle meats to maintain more of their natural shape while in a vacuumed state. Added strength comes from the ability to form around abrasion inclusions such as hard spices. Our Clarity™ line of vacuum pouches are made from cast co-extruded film, manufactured on site in our Riverside, MO location! As the name suggests, our pouches are high clarity, exceeding the standard clarity of most other brands and pouch manufacturers. These pouches are FDA approved for food contact, contain no BPA or Melamine and no starches or animal bi-products for superior and safe packaging of your product.

Determining Pouch Thickness
Vacuum pouches are measured in Mil, 1 Mil being 1/1000th of an inch. The Mil represents the thickness of the pouch, so the higher the Mil, the thicker the bag. Clarity™ pouches are one of the most durable brands available in the industry, with cast COEX construction that outperforms the 7-layer construction of most competitors.

3-Mil pouches provide a standard puncture-resistant medium barrier for most food product that doesn’t require extra strength for rigid edges. It’s the popular choice for a variety of food product including lunch meats, sausages, cheese, bakery items and more.

4-Mil pouches introduce tie layers that are certified for cook-in temperatures. These layers also provide a stronger, more puncture-resistant barrier for packaging challenging products such as whole muscle proteins that are frozen after vacuum packaging and shipped via overnight freight methods. (Please note that dry ice used in overnight shipping should never come into direct contact with pouches in the shipping container.)

5-Mil. vacuum pouches offer further protection for more rigid products including many types of bone-in items. 5-Mil pouches are a great packaging solution for polished softer cartilage-type bones such as rib bones. However, band saw cut pork chops, T-bone or Tomahawk type in-bone cuts will likely require further bone guard applications to secure their vacuum state without pin-holing.
